Think back to your childhood. Do you remember that one friend that made some kind of impact on you that changed your life for the better? Whether that friend introduced you to your favorite band or they taught you something about the world that you never knew or they were just there for you in every way possible.

Sydney Carlson’s newest coming of age short film, The Summer at Driftwood, aims to be a snapshot of nostalgia and this life-changing childhood friendship almost everyone experiences when growing up. While the film is powered by these concepts and warm summer air, it also captures the difficulties of leaving childhood, fear of the future, and the important topic of child abuse.

When writing this story about two friends at camp, Sydney set out to capture the essence of what it means to create your “found family”. In the film, June acts as Holly’s “family” in moments of distress and sadness, and often tries to show her the bright side of life. Sydney hopes to inspire her audience to show appreciation to their own “found family” and to know that you are never alone.
